Well, hello there! So glad that you could stop by. I’ve been waiting for you. Yes, you. You right there, the one reading this. I’m glad you’re here! While I hope that you are in the market for mid-century goods, even if you aren’t, I hope that you’ll peruse through the offerings and give me some feedback. I’d also love it if you shared me with you friends through Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, or even if you pinned me on Pinterest! We could go steady.
Why am I here? Well, the short story was that my job wasn’t fulfilling me anymore. It was kind of cool (I used to design forensic labs and medical examiner facilities – I’ve seen more drugs and dead bodies than most people) but there were also downsides. You are now like, “Dead people? That’s a downside.” No, silly, I was thinking more about the travel. Have you ever woken up in a city and not remembered where you were? If it’s Tuesday it must be Detroit.
There was once a time in life when I was young and idealistic, when I thought that getting a Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation would be amazing. So I did it! Bachelor’s in architecture, Master’s in Historic Preservation – the world would be my oyster. Except not. Out of grad school, I had two job offers in my field, neither of which would pay the bills or put food on the table. What’s a girl to do? Forget the dream of historic preservation (and my love of all things mid-century) and fall back to my architecture degree. It was good for a while.
But sometimes you just have to take a chance. And I did. And that’s how Make it Mid-Century was born. I love to work with my hands and always have. My father taught me the ropes of power tools and craftsmanship and my love of design and do-it-yourself has led me to all sorts of fun projects around my own house. Mid-century inspired wall murals, mod wall tile designs for my laundry room, re-wiring light fixtures (including the sputnik over my toilet – because who doesn’t need a sputnik over their toilet?), and dozens of other little projects for my own mid-century modest house. I realized that I could take this passion and provide my products to others who also share my enthusiasm.
In many ways this has been a dream come true – a culmination of my degrees, experience, and hard work. Now, fingers crossed, we have launched. This maiden voyage might have some rough seas, but I’ve taken my Dramamine™ and I’m up for the challenge. Won’t you join me? Come aboard, poke around, and let me know if you like what you see. I can’t wait to hear from you. Yes, you. Are you still confused about who I am talking about? You’re just the person I wanted to meet. Thanks for coming.
